Since acquiring Universal Metal Works in 2010, owner John Sharkey IV has demonstrated how strategic leadership, investment in people, and a commitment to American manufacturing can drive sustainable growth. At the time of purchase, the company employed just 13 full-time workers. Today, Universal Metal Works has more than doubled its workforce to 28 full-time and 4 part-time employees, creating quality manufacturing jobs and strengthening the regional economy.
Over the past 15.5 years, Universal Metal Works has built a reputation for reliability, craftsmanship, and resilience in an increasingly competitive global marketplace. U.S. manufacturers often face intense pressure from lower-cost imported products, but the company has remained competitive by focusing on quality, strong customer relationships, and a highly skilled workforce. Rather than competing solely on price, Universal Metal Works has positioned itself as a trusted supplier that delivers dependable service and high-quality products—allowing the company to maintain strong customer relationships and continue growing.
One of the most challenging periods came during the COVID-19 pandemic. As an essential manufacturer, Universal Metal Works remained open while prioritizing employee safety and operational continuity. Leadership implemented a proactive strategy by dividing the shop into two teams, each containing employees from every department. This approach reduced the risk of widespread workforce disruption and ensured that production could continue even during uncertain conditions. Through careful planning and strong leadership, the company successfully navigated the pandemic while maintaining stability for employees and customers.
Universal Metal Works has also strengthened its competitiveness through a strong commitment to domestic sourcing. All steel suppliers are based in the United States, and most materials used in production are American-made. Because of this U.S.-based supply chain, tariffs and global trade disruptions have had minimal impact on the company’s operations.
Looking ahead, Sharkey is focused on expanding Universal Metal Works’ presence in international markets. He is currently working with Kellie Greene at the North Central Small Business Development Center (SBDC) to identify and pursue new export opportunities. Through this partnership, the company has already established connections with key industry contacts in Europe and Canada, creating new opportunities to grow its existing export business and further strengthen the role of U.S. manufacturing in the global marketplace.

Through steady growth, strong leadership, and a commitment to American manufacturing, Universal Metal Works continues to demonstrate how small manufacturers can remain competitive while creating jobs and driving economic vitality in their communities.
