SBA Syracuse District Rural Small Business of the Year: New Hope Mills Manufacturing Inc.

For more than 200 years, New Hope Mills has been a cornerstone of rural entrepreneurship in Central New York—demonstrating how a legacy business can evolve, grow, and thrive in a modern economy. Founded in 1823, the company remains one of the oldest continuously operating grist mills in the United States, producing high-quality pancake mixes, baking products, and specialty foods trusted by customers nationwide.

Under the leadership of third-generation owner Doug Weed, New Hope Mills has experienced significant growth while staying true to its roots. The company has expanded its workforce from 40 to 60 employees, increased production by 35%, secured new private label contracts, and transformed its Auburn retail store and café into a vibrant community destination.

In the past year, New Hope Mills has begun working with Kellie Greene at the North Central New York Small Business Development Center (SBDC) to explore new opportunities for growth—particularly in international markets. Through this partnership, the company is in the early stages of evaluating export potential, identifying target markets, and assessing strategies to expand its brand beyond the U.S. While still in the initial phases, this work reflects New Hope Mills’ continued commitment to innovation and long-term growth.

The company has also demonstrated remarkable resilience in the face of challenges, including supply chain disruptions, rising costs, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Through it all, New Hope Mills maintained operations, protected jobs, and continued serving customers—reinforcing its role as a vital economic anchor in a rural community.

Beyond its economic contributions, New Hope Mills is deeply committed to community engagement—supporting local schools, agriculture programs, and food banks while preserving the historic legacy of its mill. Its ability to blend heritage, innovation, and community stewardship serves as a powerful example of how rural businesses can compete and lead on a national scale.

As the company looks to the future, its collaboration with the SBDC and Kellie Greene represents the next chapter—positioning New Hope Mills to thoughtfully expand into global markets while continuing to honor its rich history and strong local foundation.
