Stay and Play Doggie Daycare Owner Theresa Powers
Terry Powers lives with her best friend - a Golden Chow mix named Shadow - that she rescued from the shelter. Dogs have always been an important part of her family. That is why she decided to open 'Stay and Play Doggie Daycare' in 2014.

Terry opened her business not only to help pet owners while they were away from their dogs during the day, but also because she wanted to surround herself with these loving animals.

Terry has an Associate Degree in Human Services from Onondaga Community College, but she recieved her business experience while working at one of the largest Chevrolet dealerships in CNY for 18 years. Terry is also certified in Pet First Aid and CPR. These experiences enabled her to start and manage a successful business while giving great customer service.

As her business has continued to grow, customers traveled from as far away as Cicero and Red Creek to bring their pups in to play for the day.  The outdoor play area had expanded from 900 square feet to 4200 square feet but she still needed more space for her ever growing pack.

So, in 2018, Terry came to Onondaga SBDC to discuss her needs for expansion. Her Onondaga SBDC Advisor, Paul Brooks, assisted in connecting Terry with funding sources and developing her business narrative to qualify for funding.  Together with internal funds and assistance from Regional Planning and Development she secured her necessary financial assistance to build an addition.

The pet industry has exploded over the past few years into a billion dollar industry.  Most households have either a cat, dog or several of each.  With the hectic lives that most of us lead, our pet’s needs are being met by daycares, kennels, and groomers.

Terry’s goal is to bring that much needed service to the Elbridge area. She explains that “Doggie Daycare benefits both the dog and the owner. The benefit for the owner is that while you are doing human stuff your furry companion is living the dream. No more guilt when you are walking toward the door and your buddy goes from excitement to disappointment. Doggie Daycare lets the dog play, socialize, and have a fun day instead of counting the minutes on all of their toes waiting for you to get home. After a long day of playing, your dog will be calm, relaxed and ready for a nap.”

At Stay and Play dogs get to enjoy a safe, healthy, and fun atmosphere with lots of interaction with other dogs and people. Dogs can participate in play groups, gnaw on a favorite toy, play fetch, hang out with humans, or lounge. Each day is planned to insure the delivery of the utmost in group socialization, which not only delivers a fun environment for the pets, but also provides benefits to each dog in their care.

This woman and her facility have been abusing animals for years. Unfortunately, it is only recently that she was caught on video with her inhumane and deplorable behavior towards dogs during business hours at her facility.
