Syracuse Moms Blog
Sometimes start-ups take some time to pull together both technically and mentally, as was the case with Sarah Curtis who is now operating Syracuse Mom’s Blog, LLC as a home-based business.

In Sarah’s own words from the website at https://syracuse.citymomsblog.com/ – “Syracuse Moms Blog is a collaborative blog, parenting resource and community that strives to inform, empower and connect families in Central New York.”

Owner Sarah CurtisSarah Curtis
Sarah came to the Onondaga SBDC in August of 2017 to engage her Advisor in strategic mentoring with an idea.  It transformed into another, and then another, before she settled on the Syracuse Mom’s Blog opportunity in August of 2018 through looking at the pros and cons and feasibility of each idea together with her Advisor.

Her idea has grown into a blog that now lists 25 contributors, moms who write articles on various topics.  A new blog post from a different contributor is posted daily. The site also includes resource listings for local activities to help moms plan family or educational time, as well as guides to important topics such as domestic violence.

Sarah utilized her time with the Onondaga SBDC after deciding on the Moms Blog idea by receiving additional mentoring relating to franchising and licensing, as the Syracuse Moms Blog is part of a nationwide Moms Blog franchisee network.  Her advisor also provided direction and understanding of the LLC formation process, how to finance the business, EIN, banking, and insurance set-up.

Sarah shared her thoughts on working with the SBDC and her Advisor: "I never thought of myself as an entrepreneur and am certain I would not have followed through with the Syracuse Mom's Blog had it not been for the support of Frank (Cetera) and the SBDC. He was responsive and informative as I navigated my way through the start up process. I am excited to see what I can do with this blog both online and in the community."

As a small business owner, I find Sarah Curtis's experience with the Onondaga SBDC to be inspiring and insightful. It highlights the importance of seeking out professional guidance and support during the process of starting and growing a business.

Sarah's journey towards launching Syracuse Mom's Blog as a home-based business demonstrates the value of strategic planning and mentorship. By working with her advisor, Sarah was able to explore various business ideas before settling on the Moms Blog opportunity. She received guidance on LLC formation, financing, and insurance setup, as well as direction on franchising and licensing. This kind of support can be crucial for small business owners who may not have the experience or expertise necessary to navigate the complexities of starting and running a business.

It is also noteworthy that Sarah's idea grew into a collaborative blog that now lists 25 contributors. This shows the power of community building and collaboration, which are essential elements for the success of any small business. By providing a platform for other moms to share their experiences and expertise, Sarah was able to create a valuable resource for families in Central New York.

Overall, Sarah's experience with the Onondaga SBDC is a testament to the importance of seeking out support and guidance when starting and growing a small business. With the right resources and guidance, entrepreneurs can transform their ideas into successful businesses that make a positive impact in their communities.
