Carrying on a Family Tradition: The Cottage Inn’s New Chapter Under Mary and Ben’s Ownership

Mary's journey in the restaurant industry began at the age of 14, working at her family's establishment, The Village Inn in Harrisville. Over the years, she gained invaluable experience in various roles, from serving and bartending to managing inventory and finances. In 2019, she joined The Cottage Inn, quickly ascending to a management position. By 2022, recognizing her commitment and expertise, the previous owners offered her the opportunity to purchase the business.
With determination, Mary and Ben navigated the complexities of business ownership. They collaborated with the SBA and Pursuit Lending, and with guidance from the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at Jefferson Community College, they refined their business plan. Their efforts culminated in the successful acquisition of The Cottage Inn on March 25, 2024, reopening just two days later.

Since taking the helm, Mary and Ben have retained several staff members and welcomed new team additions, fostering a vibrant workplace culture. Ben's expertise in hardscape design, through his business Colorado Curb Appeal, led to the creation of a striking new roadside sign and a revamped outdoor patio, now a hub for live music and dining.

Looking ahead, the duo plans to expand both the bar and kitchen, continuing to build upon their family's legacy in the restaurant industry.
Mary reflects on their journey, stating:

"The SBA pointed me in the direction of the SBDC, who helped me perfect our business plan to present to Pursuit. We wouldn’t be where we are today without all of the help along the way."

Congratulations to Mary and Ben on this well-deserved recognition. Their story is a testament to perseverance, community support, and the entrepreneurial spirit thriving in Lewis County.
