We are proud to recognize Oswego Sub Shop as the 2025 Oswego County Small Business of the Year!
Have you ever had "the best subs in America"? Al Roker, the beloved NBC weatherman, sure has — and he found them right here at the Oswego Sub Shop in Oswego, NY. In fact, the shop is so near to his heart that there’s even a sub named after him! While living in the area, Roker was a regular customer, and recently, during a difficult time in his health journey, the Oswego Sub Shop surprised him with a care package. Roker took to social media to express his gratitude, sharing: "My favorite sub shop, #oswegosubshop sent me the fixings to make a few of my favorite subs. I knew Bill Greene, Sr., better known as ‘Pops.’ He turned it over to Bill, Jr. Thanks, guys." A family-owned business for 55 years and counting, the Oswego Sub Shop has been a cornerstone of the Oswego community, employing more than 40 people. Despite fierce competition from pizza places, fast-food chains, and major national sub shops, they have stood the test of time — and the secret is simple: quality and heart. Their motto says it all: "Make that sub the way you would make it if you were going to sit down and eat it yourself." It’s this commitment to quality that has kept customers coming back for generations. Their reputation isn’t just built on their massive, delicious subs — it’s also built on their dedication to the local community. From sponsoring youth sports teams to supporting community events, their involvement runs deep. The shop’s story began in 1969 with Bill Greene, Sr., who passed the torch to his son, Bill Greene, Jr., in 2002. But even today, you can still catch “Pops” working behind the counter. When Bill Jr. decided to expand and renovate, he partnered with the North Central SBDC to secure the funding needed to build an in-house bakery and enhance operations. Thanks to this support, the Sub Shop’s already legendary offerings grew to include a huge menu featuring over 60 subs, fresh salads, and baked goods. Reflecting on their experience working with the SBDC, the team at Oswego Sub Shop shared: "It is such a great feeling to be part of a community that works together with the Small Business Development Center to provide opportunities for small businesses! The Oswego Sub Shop had an amazing experience working with the SBDC in order to secure funding for our major renovation project in 2008. We were able to completely renovate and update the existing space and equipment so that we could grow the business into the 21st century. This could not have happened without SBDC!" It’s rare to see any business — especially in the restaurant industry — not only survive but thrive for more than five decades. The Oswego Sub Shop is a testament to what passion, family, and community support can accomplish. As Al Roker put it best: "The Oswego Sub Shop is probably as big an institution in Oswego as SUNY Oswego." And we couldn’t agree more. Congratulations to the Oswego Sub Shop on their continued success!
