Dr. Annette Otis started Compassionate Crossings of CNY (which has turned into Stillwaters Veterinary Care) as an in-home euthanasia and end of life care service for pets, in September of 2017. 'Stillwaters Veterinary Care' offers the opportunity to say goodbye to your beloved pet in the comfort of your own home, at your own pace. The mission is to make an always heartbreaking process as peaceful and personalized as possible. Annette financed the business with her own funds that she had saved, and invested in an ambulatory vehicle, an outbuilding, supplies, website development, marketing development and professional fees to start the service. Dr. Otis received training and mentoring from the Onondaga SBDC's Business Advisor Frank Cetera. As part of the mentoring, they discussed and proceeded forward with setting up a PC and obtained necessary B.A.I.L. services (banking, accounting, insurance, legal). Annette also took advantage of continued training offered by the Onondaga SBDC by attending multiple sessions of the Money Smart lunch & learn series, including risk management, tax planning & reporting, and managing cash flow. Annette indicates that she "should be on track to finish repaying my investment and start drawing a salary in the next 6 months. I am very happy with the progress and wanted to thank you and the Onondaga SBDC for all the tools and guidance along the way. It has been invaluable."
